The event “Research and Policy Dialogue on Housing Affordability and Energy-Efficient Renovations”, held on 11 June 2026 at the European Commission in Brussels, brought together researchers and policy experts to discuss the relationship between housing affordability and the energy transition.
Organized in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) Task Force Housing, the initiative provided a platform for exchanging evidence, experiences, and policy perspectives on how energy-efficient renovations can contribute to more sustainable and affordable housing across Europe.
The dialogue explored the legal, social, and economic dimensions of housing policies in the context of the European Green Deal and the ongoing transition towards a low-carbon economy.
Particular attention was devoted to the challenges and opportunities arising from the implementation of energy-efficiency measures, with a focus on balancing environmental objectives and social inclusion.
The event featured contributions from Professor Lucia Ruggeri, Director of the School of Law at the University of Camerino, and Dr. Gianna Giardini, Ph.D. researcher at IUSS Pavia and the University of Camerino. Through their presentations and discussion, the speakers highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research and evidence-based policymaking in addressing housing affordability while advancing Europe’s sustainability goals.
By fostering dialogue between academia and public institutions, the event contributed to the broader debate on developing innovative and socially responsible policies capable of supporting both the energy transition and citizens’ access to affordable housing.
